After checking every bicycle, oiling every chain, tightening all screws and pumping up the tires, you are almost ready to go. Beside a bike helmet, here’s what you also need in order to have a fun and safe trip:
1. Sun protection
Even if the sun is not burning, you shouldn’t underestimate the solar radiation. Ensure sun protection for you in your family by applying sunblock before going out. Don’t forget sunglasses, too!
2. Windproof clothing
Outside of the city the wind is different and the air gets cooler. Wind can get especially dangerous when you’re sweating from cycling. Make sure you and your family are wearing windproof and appropriate clothing that keeps your body at just the right temperature.
3. Comfort first: Padded pants and comfortable shoes
Cycling can get uncomfortable after only a few hours if you’re not dressed appropriately. To avoid a painful experience, make sure you’re wearing padded cycling pants. Comfortable, well-fitting and non-slippery shoes are also a must-have!
4. Water and hot beverages
You may not even notice it at times, but cycling can make your body sweat a lot! To compensate for this, make sure to take enough water with you and take small breaks to hydrate. Find water bottles for your cycling trip here!
Especially on hot days it’s good to have warm beverages at hand – such as tea or coffee. Find out why here!
5. Snacks for more energy to go
Cycling is only fun when your body is up to it. That’s why you have to make sure it’s provided with enough energy. Take enough snacks with you – not only for the small breaks, but maybe also for a picknick in the woods or at the riverside. Granola bars, baked goods, fruits and vegetables are all good choices for the occasion.
6. Repair kit and bicycle pump
Of course, it is important to check your tires before starting your cycling tour. However, something might go wrong along the way. In this case it’s worth having a simple bicycle repair kit and an air pump with you!
7. First aid kit / Band-aid
What was the saying again? Better safe than sorry! If someone gets injured along the way and bruises their knee, a small first aid kit with some disinfectant and band-aid will save the day.
8. Camera for photos
Yes, both of your hands should stay on your bicycle handlebar while moving. However, you can always stop along the way to capture the beautiful landscapes with your camera! Maybe there is some space left in the family photo album?
You are now well prepared for your cycling tour and it’s time to go! We wish you lots of fun (and tailwind) on your trip!
