4 ideas for (more) sustainable gift wrapping

Giving and receiving gifts is always fun. Especially during Christmas time, gift exchanging is an important tradition that people of all ages are looking forward to for months. Unfortunately, the packaging almost often wanders into the trash can. Is there maybe a way to avoid that?

Gifts are mostly being wrapped in gift wrapping paper. Even though it’s quite pretty and can be acquired in thousands of different patterns, it’s not very sustainable, because it can’t really be reused. If each of us receives 3 to 4 Christmas gifts on average, it adds up to a whole lot of trash very quickly. Let’s make it better this year! In this article, we’ll show you 4 ideas for (more) sustainable gift wrapping that you should definitely try next time!

1. Re-givable: Festive pouches and gift bags

Reusable pouches made of fabric are quite useful for grocery shopping and help reduce plastic waste. Why not use them for gift wrapping, too? In department stores you can find many bags with festive prints that you can use. You can also sew them yourself and decorate them to add a personal touch. You can also use gift bags, because they can also be re-used in the next holiday season.

2. Happiness in a box: Packing gifts in gift boxes

Gift wrapping is no fun for you? No problem: Gift boxes are not only pretty, they’re also really easy to use. Your gifts are packed beautifully in the blink of an eye. The received box can then be used for storage or re-used for gifts in the next Christmas season. You can find lots of pretty gift boxes in many department stores and gift shops.

3. Upcycling: Old paper instead of gift-wrapping paper

Gift packaging doesn’t always have to be expensive: You can quickly turn old paper, such as newspapers, into gift-wrapping paper. Just wrap the gift as usual and then decorate the packaging whatever way you like. You can use ribbons, personalized stamps or items like cinnamon sticks or dried orange slices. There’s no limit to your creativity here!

4. Furoshiki: Gift wrapping with fabric

This tradition of gift wrapping comes from Japan and is perfect for packing smaller gifts. Simply put the gift on a square piece of fabric, take two opposing ends and tie them into a knot. Then take the other two ends and do the same. Hide the ends of the first knot and tighten the upper knot.

Alternatively, wrap the gift in the fabric and secure with a ribbon (see photo on the left.)
